Melbourne Historical Research Group Annual Talk:
By our guest speakers, Sue Brown & Janet Spavold.
Take a step back in time as we explore the revelatory pottery heritage of Ticknall and the surrounding clay-rich areas of South Derbyshire, including Calke, Derby Hills, and Melbourne Common.
From the 12th to the 18th centuries, these areas were bustling with kilns and craftspeople, churning out everything from everyday butter pots to beautifully decorated wares with secret symbolic meanings (yes, your soup bowl might’ve been deeply spiritual).
We’ll look at:
  • What kinds of pots were made
  • Where they ended up
  • Who made them (it was often the same families, generation after generation!)
  • And what those curious old decorations really meant.
This talk will be both fascinating and down-to-earth, because even a broken pot has a story to tell!
